VDES recognised under SOLAS as the satellite era begins

In May 2026, IMO's Maritime Safety Committee agreed to recognise VDES (VHF Data Exchange System) as an alternative to AIS under SOLAS, effective 1 January 2028. Satellites carrying VDES payloads from Space Norway and Lusospace have successfully reached orbit, marking the start of satellite-based e-Navigation infrastructure.
